One day while surfing the web, I came across the story of David Reimer, a man who was born a boy but raised as a girl until he was in his early teens.
His tragic life story was the result of a circumcision gone wrong followed by his parents listening to the wrong "experts".
It was a sad but inspirational story that led me to read a book about his life, As Nature Made Him: the Boy Who was Raised As a Girl by John Colapinto.
That led to me seeking more information and books on "differently-sexed" people.
Right now I'm reading about real life transsexuals, some famous and some unknown to me.
These topics fascinate me and before now, I was unaware of terms like sex reassignment surgery and ambigous genitalia.
I'm not sure what I'll do after I exhaust our library's small cache of material on these topics. |
